PANAJI: The Goa Kula-Mundkar Sangharsh Samiti will observe Tiller Day on October 8, raising concerns over the pending land rights of Kula-Mundkars across the state.
The Samiti said that despite the passage of nearly five decades, several Kula-Mundkars are still awaiting legal ownership of the lands they have traditionally cultivated. According to the organisation, many such properties continue to be recorded in the names of Bhatkars.
The Samiti demanded that the government conduct a comprehensive survey of Kula-Mundkar lands and take steps to ensure that eligible cultivators receive their rightful ownership.
“Even after 50 years, our lands have not been transferred to us. They continue to remain in the names of Bhatkars,” the Samiti said, reiterating its demand for legal recognition of Kula-Mundkar land rights.
The organisation also warned that failure to address the issue could lead to a statewide campaign against the government during the upcoming Assembly elections.
As part of its awareness campaign, the Samiti will conduct the ‘Bahujan Jagruti Sawad’ programme across Goa to educate Kula-Mundkars about their legal rights and pending land claims.
The programme will be conducted in two phases. The North Goa phase will run from November 2 to 25, followed by the South Goa phase from December 2 to 25.
The Samiti said the campaign is aimed at building awareness among Kula-Mundkars and bringing renewed attention to long-pending land ownership claims across Goa.
